SENATOR CRAIG THOMAS TO HOLD HEARING ON INCINERATION OPTIONS MARCH 28 Excerpts from the Jackson Hole News March 8 and 10, 2000 US Senator Craig Thomas, head of the National Parks and Resources subcommittee will hold a hearing on March 28, 2:30 p.m. in Washington to investigate the alternatives to incinerating some of the 65,000 cubic meters of plutonium contaminated waste stored at INEEL. "We are going to push this, as you know, until we have the answer," said Thomas. RICHARDSON ACKNOWLEDGED GROWING WYOMING OPPOSITION TO THE INCINERATOR, and has pledged to pressure his staff to find alternatives and to issue a policy on options to burning within 30 days on whether to proceed with the proposed incinerator. Mr. Ackland will answer questions and sign books after his formal remarks. ___________________________________ BNFL in The Newsá * Japan and Germany have barred BNFL from conducting business in their countries. * Switzerland has sent investigators to inspect BNFL facilities. * Sweden will no longer allow BNFL to reprocess its spent nuclear fuel. * Ireland is demanding BNFL's Sellafield plant be closed due to its radioactive contamination of the Irish Sea. * The British Nuclear Installation's Inspectorate condemned BNFL's safety and management records. * Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden have demanded urgent talks with British ministers on the future of Sellafield, BNFL's Cumbrian plant. * BNFL's CEO resigned two weeks ago in response to the unfolding scandal NOTE * BNFL has US projects totaling $6-$9 billion; the revenue the plutonium incinerator will generate will account for 20% of that. * Plans to privatize 49 % of BNFL are in serious jeopardy because of the recent worldwide scandal over falsification of safety records. * BNFL has indicated they must increase profits on US projects by 15 per cent to salvage the privatization plan. ____________________________________ US PROTESTORS CONFRONT BNFL An excerpt from The Financial Times Feb. 24, 2000 By Matthew Jones in London and Ralph Atkins in Berlin US anti-nuclear campaigners (Jackson residents Tat and Paul Maxwell and Jim Laybourn) flew to Britain on Wednesday to publicise their legal fight against plans by British Nuclear Fuels, the UK atomic power group, to build a $1.2bn nuclear waste incinerator near Yellowstone National Park. They will deliver 350 letters of complaint against the incinerator to John Taylor, BNFL's chief executive, on Friday.
