Campaign: Propsed Accelerated Retrieval Project - Phases I & II
The DOE, EPA and Idaho Dept. of Environmental Quality are proposing to further an Accelerated Clean-up Plan for exhuming radioactive and transuranic waste from Pit 4 and Pit 6 located at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex at INL. These unlined pits contain waste from Cold War weapons production which was shipped from Rocky Flats Plant in Colorado during the 1060’s. Work to retrieve some portion of the waste from Pit 4 began in January 2005, and presently they are seeking public comment to phase in a similar retrieval plan for Pit 6. This waste retrieval is being sought because contaminants from the radioactive elements are leaching down into the soil and aquifer, and it also keeps them compliant with a court order from the State of Idaho to remove the waste. KYNF will continue to monitor this process as well as continue to inquire and probe the question of why the waste remains in Pit 9, which is known to be much more volatile, hazardous and problematic for retrieval.
