Ahern Presses for Sellafield Closure

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has launched his strongest attack yet on the continued operation of the Sellafield nuclear waste reprocessing plant.

Following up a call at the annual conference of his Fianna Fail party for the removal of the complex, he claimed closure was now the only option.

Mr Ahern told Irish radio he had raised the issue "several times" with Prime Minister Tony Blair and said that to maintain Sellafield was "something that is not acceptable to the Irish people.
